A 17-year-old defendant was held Oct. 28 on a misdemeanor handgun possession charge in light of an attempted murder charge that is still pending.

According to the prosecutor, in the handgun case, police approached the defendant as a person of interest in a shooting.

The defendant started walking away, and then dropped what is believed to be a weapon in a grassy area. The weapon was not recovered.

The prosecution also told Judge Phillip Jackson that the defendant, is pending a warrant for an attempted murder case in which the victim was shot in the chest. The warrant has not been served.

According to the prosecution, the defendant poses a serious public safety issue given the pending warrant and could be a flight risk.

The defendant’s defense attorney requested release, noting the prosecution’s accusatorial tone towards his client.

Nevertheless, given the safety issues, especially in light of a pending warrant for a non-fatal shooting along with an arrest for a handgun violation, Judge Jackson held the defendant without bail.
