Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland presided as a homicide defendant waived his Hick’s right.
Derrien Gamble, 21, is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime and two counts of firearm possession with a felony conviction.
The Hicks rule states that a defendant has the right to have his case heard within 180 days following his or his attorney’s first court appearance. Gamble’s Hicks date was July 29, but he waived it in the in return for scheduling a trial as soon as possible.
On April 29, Gamble rejected a global plea offer via his attorney James Sweeting III for this case and an unrelated attempted murder case. The offer was life in prison suspending all but 60 years.
The trial, expected to last for six days, is scheduled for July 30 before Judge Videtta A. Brown.
