A Baltimore man accused of fatally shooting 33-year-old Earnest Jackson last summer will have his jury trial on June 12 after counsel informed the court they were not prepared to proceed on Jan. 3.
The prosecutor informed Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn that there was no plea offer currently on the table for Rakim Muhammad, 21, as the State’s Attorney’s Office transitions to the new administration. All pleas are required to be reassessed under the new administration, she noted.
Both the prosecutor and defense attorney Donald Wright concluded that they were not prepared to move forward with a trial on Tuesday, and Judge Phinn rescheduled the trial for this summer before Judge Jennifer Schiffer.
A Baltimore Police Department (BPD) news release reported that Muhammad shot Jackson on the 3200 block of Fenwick Avenue, where police found the victim with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Jackson died at a hospital a short time later, and Muhammad was arrested two weeks later.
