Defense counsel for a 47-year-old attempted homicide defendant argued for his client’s release on Nov. 7, saying the victim actually attacked the defendant and her dog with a machete moments before the incident.
During Tuesday’s bail review hearing, defense attorney Mauricio Barreiro said the 45-year-old victim, allegedly drunk, got into an argument with Nicole Jackson, also known as Prince Jackson, outside the defendant’s home on the 500 block of North Rose Street on Aug. 18, 2022. Barreiro disputed the prosecution’s details of the incident, specifically, that his client shot the victim in the arm after fighting over a parking space.
“There’s no reason why Miss Jackson should not be realeased from jail,” the attorney said. He also informed Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer that Jackson, who he said does not own a gun, has been incarcerated for nearly 15 months, during which her trial has been delayed twice.
Judge Schiffer agreed with the prosecutor’s request to continue to hold Jackson without bail given the risk to public safety.
The defendant is currently scheduled for a jury trial on March 21, 2024. Jackson is charged with attempted first and second-degree murder and first-degree assault as well as a single drug charge and seven weapons charges.
