Defense Claims Evidence Lacking in West Baltimore Murder Case

The trial of 45-year-old Jerrod Fenwick continued on April 24 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge John A. Howard with jurors hearing testimony from witnesses who investigated the murder of 38-year-old Dwayne Flintall

Fenwick is charged with first-degree murder and four gun violations in connection to the fatal shooting, which occurred Feb. 16, 2024 at a residence on the 900 block of N. Carrollton Avenue.

At trial, Flintall’s girlfriend recalled speaking with the victim on the night of the murder. Around 3 a.m., she heard gunfire while inside the residence and went downstairs to see her boyfriend lying prone on the sidewalk outside.

Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Surveillance footage and cellphone location data and text records allegedly placed Fenwick in the area of the shooting and revealed he communicated with 29-year old co-defendant Davontaye Watkins in the moments leading up to the shooting. According to one detective’s testimony, a cellphone linked to Fenwick pinged multiple cell towers.

Responding officers reportedly saw a dark‑colored Jeep Grand Cherokee with temporary paper tags driving past them at a high rate of speed, heading southbound toward West Lafayette Avenue. Investigators believe Watkins was driving the car.

Detectives used Baltimore’s CitiWatch camera network to track the Jeep allegedly to Watkins’ residence. After obtaining a search warrant and processing the Jeep for evidence, investigators collected DNA samples from a soda can and several water bottles left inside the vehicle.

During cross‑examination, defense attorney Brandon Thornton contended that the DNA results did not necessarily establish Fenwick as a contributor and  noted investigators failed to recover any fingerprints tied to Fenwick. He also emphasized that detectives were unable to recover any firearms related to the shooting while conducting a search of Watkins’ home.

The trial is set to continue on April 24.
