On Nov. 10, a convicted homicide defendant was praised in a review hearing before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey M. Geller.
In 1987, Marlow Bates was convicted of murder, having a deadly weapon, and a for a handgun violation.
Now 60, Bates is serving a life sentence for murder plus an additional 20 years for the handgun violation. A third count, the use of a deadly weapon, was merged with the other counts.
Defense attorney Nancy Forster explained that the defendant has been doing tremendously well. She described him as a well-known speaker for troubled youth. She also said he has spoken to newly elected Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates about social reform. Currently, the defendant does home remodeling and looks to continue his talks while maintaining his job.
Judge Geller was very proud to hear the excellent report and set another review hearing in six months on May 1, 2023.
