A 25-year-old murder defendant was found mentally incompetent to stand trial, and he was deemed a danger to himself and others.
Ajay Wiggins is charged with first-degree murder in connection to a homicide that occurred on Nov. 15, 2024, during which he allegedly strangled his mother, 64-year-old Joyce Gaskins in their home on the 1600 block of Druid Hill Avenue.
In a Jan. 29 hearing, Wiggins told Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gale E. Rasin that his name is Michael Wiggins, even though official records identify him as Ajay Wiggins.
Judge Rasin ruled that Wiggins was incompetent to stand trial in that he doesn’t understand the charges against him; he was also found to be a danger to himself and others.
Judge Rasin also ordered that Wiggins undergo an annual mental health review, the first on Feb. 4. Wiggins’ next court appearance is scheduled on Feb. 7.
