Homicide defendant Alante Batson and his attorney Sharon Dubey accepted a plea of life on Aug. 16, before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Cynthia H. Jones.

Batson, 23, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Dionte Green, 40, on Dec. 2, 2020. According to court documents, on Nov. 24, 2021, surveillance cameras show Green in front of the Downtown Mini Mart store located on the unit block of N. Howard Street. Batson was initially charged with first-degree murder, robbery and conspiracy to robbery.

Batson, along with a man who was only identified as “June Bug,” can be seen engaging in a scuffle with the victim. The camera turns away from the altercation and when it returns Green is seen on the ground not moving. The two male assailants were seen walking away from the victim.

Green was found by a passerby and transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with severe injuries to his head. He entered into a coma and later died. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the death as a homicide by complications of blunt force trauma.

During police questioning on Feb. 20, 2021, Batson admitted to being there the night of the incident. He said he struck the victim after the unidentified accomplice. Once Green was on the ground, the unidentified male kicked the victim while the defendant took his cellphone and credit card, court documents state.

Batson was sentenced to life, suspending all but 40 years with five years of supervised probation.

Dubey said she planned to appeal his sentence in the next five years because the defendant had more life ahead of him.
