A Baltimore man accused of shooting a taxi driver was hospitalized for undisclosed medical issues and absent on Feb. 7 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn.
Gary Weldon, 34, is charged with first and second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, armed carjacking, carjacking, use of a firearm during a violent crime, car theft, unauthorized removal of property, reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm with a felony conviction, and having a handgun on his person in connection to an incident on July 25, 2021.
On Monday, Judge Phinn listened as Weldon’s defense attorney, Judit Otvos, informed the court that the defendant’s health issues may be life-long, requiring continued hospitalization. She also said depending on the defendant’s condition around the time of the trial, he may be unable to attend.
According to CBS Baltimore, Weldon allegedly shot the 34-year-old victim in the head and back during a carjacking on July 25, 2021. Baltimore City police officers responded to a reported shooting on the 3700 block of Nortonia Road, where they found the victim.
The victim managed to grab the suspect’s fanny pack, which was used to connect Weldon to the crime, said police.
Weldon’s trial is scheduled for Sept. 19.
