On Dec. 5, attempted murder defendant Kilo Byrd accepted a plea deal from the assistant state’s attorney in front of Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Althea M. Handy.
Byrd, 45, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and will serve a 10 year sentence, suspending all but 18 months in home detention.
Byrd accepted the offer during lunch break right before closing arguments were scheduled to occur. The assistant state’s attorney also made a plea offer during the hearing yesterday that was rejected by Judge Handy.
Byrd, represented by defense attorney Andrew Saller, had been charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, firearm use in a felony violent crime, having a loaded handgun on his person and discharging a firearm in connection with a May 30 non-fatal shooting.
According to documents from the District Court of Maryland, Byrd had been charged in connection with an incident on the 2600 block of Baker Street in which a man had been shot three times. Byrd was identified through eyewitness testimony from someone who knew both him and the victim.
Police recovered multiple shell casings from the scene. Multiple handguns were recovered from the residence that Byrd was living in. The incident allegedly occurred as a result of a dispute between Byrd and the victim, his stepbrother.
