Accused Killer Gets 25 Years in Prison For Fatally Shooting 54-Year-Old Man

A 52-year-old man charged with the murder of Ahnmad Artis in February 2022 was sentenced to 25 years of incarceration on April 11 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Kendra Ausby.

Garrett Smith opted for the prosecution’s plea offer on Tuesday as opposed to proceeding with a scheduled jury trial that was expected to last four days. The plea offer included 40 years, suspending all but 20 years, and five years of supervised probation for first-degree murder; a consecutive 20 years, suspending all but five years, and the first five years without parole for firearm use in a felony violent crime; and a suspended 15 years for firearm possession with a felony conviction.

Smith was represented by defense attorney Roland Harris.

Baltimore Police news release stated that officers found the 54-year-old victim with gunshot wounds on the 1800 block of Ashburton Street shortly before 10:00 a.m. on Feb. 11, 2022. Artis was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.
