A Baltimore man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the brutal murder of 28-year-old Mason Moldoven in 2020 after accepting a plea agreement from the prosecution last year.
Timothy Callanan, 30, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last December, a charge that was amended by the prosecution from the initial first-degree murder charge. On May 13, the defendant and his attorney, Tony Garcia, appeared for sentencing before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer.
Callanan pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for 40 years, suspending all but 25 years, and five years of supervised probation. He must also undergo mental health treatment.
During the proceedings, Moldoven’s mother wept as she detailed the “misery” her daughter’s death brought to her family.
“I had one child,” she said. “Yesterday was Mother’s Day. How do you think I spent it? Crying. Not fun. Not at all.”
In between sobs, Moldoven’s mother described Callanan as “an animal” for not only stabbing the victim, but then putting her body in a plastic container and leaving it in an alley on the 1100 block of Gorsuch Avenue. Baltimore Police Department detectives reported they believed Moldoven was killed between Aug. 28, 2020, and Sept. 1, 2020, having found her remains on Sept. 2, 2020.
“You wanna know why the world is so ugly? Because people like him get to live and people like her don’t,” Moldoven’s mother said.
Callanan later addressed the court and apologized to Moldoven’s family for their loss.
“You can’t overstate how many lives Mason has clearly touched,” Judge Schiffer concluded.
