On March 29, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland rescheduled the jury trial for a 27-year-old accused of a 2021 murder due to a conflict with MDEC, the court’s long-awaited technological upgrade to integrate the state’s courts.
Ameer Gittens is charged with first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime and firearm possession with a felony conviction for the Oct. 31, 2021, murder of Antwan Andrews.
Gittens’ trial was scheduled for April 29 at his last appearance in reception court, but due to the Baltimore City Circuit Court’s transition to the Maryland Electronic Courts system in the beginning of May, his attorney, James Sweeting III, and the prosecutor assigned to the case were instructed to find another trial date Friday morning.
Judge Copeland set Gittens’ new trial date for Aug. 7. Judge Yolanda A. Tanner will preside over the four-day proceeding.
District Court of Maryland documents indicate 20-year-old Andrews was found with multiple gunshot wounds on the 3500 block of Leeds Street. Upon Gittens’ arrest, a Baltimore County Police officer recovered a 9mm ghost gun, which was later found to be consistent with three of four shell casings found on the scene at Leeds Street.
Last year, Gittens was found guilty of the murder of a Rosedale man and his son.
