On Oct. 11, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn set a new trial date for 44-year-old homicide defendant Amit Kumar.
Kumar is charged with first-degree murder, use of a deadly weapon with the intent to injure and second-degree murder in connection to the Jan. 11, 2019, first-degree murder of his wife, Ankita Verma, in their home on the 6700 block of Holabird Avenue.
According to Baltimore Witness, Kumar was found guilty of use of a deadly weapon with the intent to injure on Nov. 18, 2019, but following an appeal, is now being tried again.
Defense counsel representing Kumar, Brandon Thornton, stated that the defendant is being remanded.
The prosecution offered Kumar a plea for 60 years in prison with five years without probation on the count of first-degree murder and a concurrent five years in prison for second-degree murder. The defendant rejected this plea.
Judge Phinn set a trial date for March. 1, 2024, through March. 6, 2024, lasting four days before John A. Howard.
Documents from the Appellate Court of Maryland state that the defendant appealed on the basis that there were issues regarding the voir dire, or jury selection, process in his first trial.
