A Baltimore man charged with manslaughter in 2018 was granted bail by Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer on July 18.

Defendant Rodney Harris Jr. was charged with manslaughter for allegedly beating his pregnant girlfriend, injuring her and killing their unborn child on April 4, 2018.

The defendant, who will be released on home detention, is required to stay away from the victim and not contact her.

According to court documents, officers responded to a call for a possible assault. Officers spoke with the victim following her transport to the hospital and she identified Harris as her boyfriend and assailant. The victim was six months pregnant at the time and suffered multiple injuries as a result of the attack.

Harris was charged initially on April 6, 2018, with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment. Following a jury trial held in October 2019, he was convicted of manslaughter and first- and second-degree assault. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison

Harris is next scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 29 before Judge Melissa M. Phinn in reception court.
