A convicted homicide defendant was denied his request for an alcohol and drug treatment evaluation on April 11 after Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Lynn Stewart Mays told him he was not yet eligible to make any motions because of his ongoing sentence.

According to the prosecution, Dashonn Gipson is currently serving a life sentence plus 25 years for first-degree murder and two weapons charges that stemmed from an incident on June 8, 2016. Fox45 News previously reported that Gipson was convicted for the murder of Tiffany Lowery on the 1300 block of James Street.

The report states that Lowery was shot seven times and that Gipson was identified as the shooter after video surveillance footage showed him throwing away a soda can at the scene.

During Tuesday’s proceeding, Gipson informed the judge that he filed the motion of his own accord without any representation.

“I need help,” the 33-year-old defendant said. “I had a lot of problems growing up … I’m trying to better myself.”

Judge Mays denied Gipson’s request as he is not eligible given the time he has currently served. Judge Mays also suggested the defendant contact an attorney for future filings.
