Attempted Murder Defendant Found Guilty of First-Degree Assault

Attempted murder defendant Corey Pointer was found guilty of first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and robbery on July 27 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Cynthia H. Jones. 

Pointer, 26, was accused of punching, shooting and robbing a woman on the 500 block of Normandy Avenue on March 22, 2021, over a supposed $40 debt from a marijuana deal. 

Despite his three convictions, Pointer was found not guilty on seven other counts, including first and second-degree attempted murder, armed robbery, theft over $1,500 under $25,000, wearing/carrying/transporting a handgun, use of a handgun in a crime of violence and discharging a firearm. 

During the three days of trial the jury heard testimony from several officers and the lead detective and the victim. The victim’s testimony was key in the prosecution’s case, as there was little to no forensic evidence and no other eyewitnesses.

The victim said she never saw Pointer with a gun nor did she see who shot her due to blood from her injuries getting in her eyes. The victim also said she was walking away from the scene when she was shot. 

Pointer was found not guilty of the gun-related charges, but there was evidence of him being at the scene and the victim’s backpack being found in his car.

Pointer’s sentencing date is scheduled for Oct. 11.
