A 40-year-old Baltimore man charged with first-degree assault accepted a plea on June 3 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer

Michael Brown is charged with first and second-degree assault, use of a firearm during a violent crime, use of a deadly weapon with intent to injure, having a handgun on his person, having a loaded handgun on his person and discharging firearm within Baltimore City in connection to an incident on Dec. 5, 2019.

On Friday, the prosecutor presented a plea of 20 years, suspending all but five years, with three years supervised probation for first-degree assault, and a concurrent three years for having a loaded handgun on his person.

Under the plea, the defendant must register as a gun offender and have no contact with the victim.

Brown’s defense attorney, Donald Wright, informed the court that his client is a local businessman and has seven kids that he cares for along with being the primary caretaker for his ill mother.

Wright requested that his client either receive an imposed fully-suspended sentence or be allowed to spend the rest of his time on home detention.

After listening to counsel, Judge Schiffer declined the defense’s request, believing that the prosecutor’s offer was reasonable and fair.
