A jury came to a verdict on April 25, finding 29-year-old Marquis Dixon guilty of manslaughter and two counts of possession of a firearm with a felony conviction before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Cynthia Jones.
He was found not guilty of first and second-degree murder and of use of a firearm during a violent crime.
Marquis Dixon was initially charged with first degree murder, second degree murder, manslaughter firearm use in a felony violent crime, two counts of firearm possession with a felony conviction, and having a handgun on his person in connection to an incident that occurred on Feb. 10, 2020.
The defendant submitted and later withdrew a request for new counsel before Judge Gregory Sampson, claiming him and his defense counsel, Romeo Showell, “had problems, but got over it.”
Judge Sampson accepted the defendant’s withdrawal of request for new counsel and Mr. Showell represented him at trial.
According to court documents, at approximately 3:57 p.m., officers were called to respond to reports of a shooting at the 500 block of Bethune Road and found a group of people surrounding Devon Stuart, who was lying face up on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound to the left torso.
Stewart was identified by his son at the scene and was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma, where he died.
The trial began on April 1.
