A Baltimore man convicted of manslaughter is still complying with his mental health treatment program and making progress towards greater independence, according to his status hearing on Feb. 2.
Genesis Collins Jr., 51, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2013, was convicted for setting himself on fire and jumping onto his mother on the 3800 block of Cottage Avenue.
According to the victim, Audrey Collins, in a statement made to the Baltimore Police Department before her passing, her son poured rubbing alcohol on his head and set himself on fire with a lighter before grabbing onto her. The attack severely burned her and resulted in her death four months later.
The Baltimore Sun previously reported that the dispute began after the defendant became suicidal over owing money to a drug dealer.
The victim had previously pressed charges against her son for theft in 1997 and requested multiple protection orders against him beginning in 2002.
Collins appeared in mental health court on Wednesday for a status hearing.
The defendant was resentenced and recommended to mental health court in 2019 and is complying with his treatment program.
He informed Judge Gale E. Rasin that he is enjoying his employment and will be moving into assisted living at the end of the month.
Collins is scheduled to return to mental health court for another status hearing on March 16.
