The trial of three co-defendants charged in a 2019 homicide was pushed to the latter half of 2022 in part by the Maryland Judiciary’s latest announcement to postpone all jury trials until early February in response to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.
On Dec. 29, the prosecutor for all cases said he and defense counsel agreed on a trial date of Aug. 2, 2022, for the trial of Devon Bynum, Kiray Walker, and Malik Brooks. The trio was originally expected to go to trial in March 2022 but was among eight cases postponed during Wednesday’s reception court proceedings.
Effective Wednesday, Baltimore City Circuit Court will finish all jury trials that are already underway, while jury trials scheduled between Dec. 29 and Feb. 8, 2022, will be rescheduled.
Bynum, 18, Walker, 20, and Brooks, 22, are charged in connection to a homicide on Nov. 14, 2019, and are represented by defense attorneys Donna D’Alessio, Catherine Flynn, and Martin Cohen, respectively. Bynum is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to first-degree murder, and using a gun to commit a crime, and Walker and Brooks are charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to first-degree murder, and firearm use in a violent crime.
