Jury selection for the trial of a 58-year-old homicide defendant began on Sep. 15 at the Baltimore City Circuit Court.
Baltimore resident Cleveland Deshields is charged with first-degree murder in connection to an incident on Nov. 2, 2018.
According to FoxNews, Deshields allegedly assaulted his wife and left her with injuries at 11:30 p.m. on the 1700 block of North Bentalou Street. The 54-year-old woman was taken to a hospital for treatment but passed away on May 5, 2019.
Prior to jury selection, the prosecutor offered a plea of life, suspending all but 25 years, without the possibility of parole and five years of probation for first-degree murder.
Defense attorney Maureen Rowland said that the offer was unacceptable and Judge Philip S. Jackson proceeded with jury selection.
Jury selection is expected to concluded on Sept. 16, and the trial is expected to last four to five days.
