30-Year-Old Denied Bail for Royal Farms Stabbing

A Baltimore man was denied bail on Aug. 25 after allegedly stabbing another man more than 10 times outside a Royal Farms earlier this year.

Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge John S. Nugent presided over bail review on Wednesday when counsel presented the case against David Hanley. Hanley, 30, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, and use of a deadly weapon with the intent to injure.

According to defense attorney Bradley MacFee, Hanley and his girlfriend were arguing inside a Royal Farms on 62nd Street on Jan. 23, when another man “imposes himself” into the argument. When the couple leaves the store, the man follows, MacFee said, and “continuously disputes with Hanley.”

Outdoor video surveillance shows the man allegedly pulling a baton from his clothing and beating Hanley, MacFee said. Hanley then “defended himself the only way he knows how” and stabbed the man multiple times.

MacFee noted that the defendant went to the store because of a diabetic event, which when symptomatic, impacts Hanley’s judgement, according to his family. Hanley was pre-approved for home detention.

While the defense attorney said the victim was stabbed 11 times, the prosecution said he was stabbed 12 times. Neither the prosecution nor MacFee said whether the victim survived.

“The court is concerned about the seriousness of the allegations in this case,” said the prosecutor, who recommended Hanley be held without bail.

Judge Nugent denied Hanley bail, adding that he was clearly a threat to public safety.

Hanley is scheduled for reception court on Nov. 4.
