The getaway driver involved in the 2024 armed robbery outside a Family Dollar store completed all but his supervised probation prior to his sentencing on June 29 after previously pleading guilty last year.
Darnell Johnson and his co-defendant, Dionte Cain, initially faced attempted murder, armed robbery, reckless endangerment and related conspiracy and weapons charges for shooting a 76-year-old man while attempting to rob him in the store’s parking lot on the 5300 block of York Road on April 2, 2024. Baltimore Police investigation identified Cain as the shooter and Johnson as the getaway driver, who plead guilty in April 2025.
On Monday, Johnson and his attorney, Lawrence Rosenberg, appeared before Judge John A. Howard as he imposed a sentence of 15 years, suspending all but time served, for conspiracy to commit armed robbery, a consecutive 5 years, suspending all but time served, and five years of supervised probation for being an accessory after the fact and a concurrent 18 months for having a loaded handgun in a vehicle.
The remaining charges were dismissed.
Johnson remains under five years of supervised probation at this time. He ultimately served 19 months and has since been working, Rosenberg said at sentencing, and has not committed any violations. Defense counsel added that he will file a motion to modify Johnson’s sentencing within the required 90-day window.
Rosenberg also noted that his client was incarcerated on the day of the incident and released on home detention on April 25, 2024.
Johnson testified against Cain during the latter’s first trial in October 2025 when a mistrial was declared. According to Johnson’s testimony, Cain confessed to shooting the victim who was sitting in a nearby truck.
Cain was found guilty of some related conspiracy, reckless endangerment and weapons violations after his retrial earlier this month.
