Shooting Defendants Scheduled for Trial in August

On May 12, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Copeland scheduled two separate attempted murder cases for trial in August.

Jhony Lajuj-Capriel, 19, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, various firearm-related charges and reckless endangerment for his alleged involvement in a shooting on the 2700 block of Wegworth Lane on May 26.

The incident resulted in one teenage victim, who was not the intended target, being shot in the wrist and a second victim was involved in a car crash with the vehicle the defendant was occupying. The second victim did not sustain any injuries.

On Tuesday, Capriel’s lawyer, Samuel Seidler, requested to postpone Capriel’s trial due to a medical condition that prohibits him from walking or being able to appear at the trial.

Capriel’s case, which has been scheduled for trial twice before in February and May.

The prosecution did not object to the request.

Judge Copeland scheduled the hearing for Aug. 31 before Baltimore City Court Judge Anthony Vittoria.

Judge Copeland also scheduled another shooting defendant’s trial in August.

Absolon Castillo-Martinez, 27, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, firearm possession, reckless endangerment, and discharging a firearm for his involvement in a shooting on July 31, 2025 on the 400 block of Robinson Street.

After rejecting a plea deal for life suspending all put 25 years with five years on supervised probation, Martinez was scheduled for trial on Aug. 4 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Lawrence Fletcher-Hill.
