Victim’s Family in Sorrow Manslaughter Sentencing

Karin Redfern‘s case concluded on March 23 with a sentencing before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Althea M. Handy

Redfern was charged with several counts of attempted murder, manslaughter, and possession of a weapon for the stabbing of Demetri Briscoe on June 1, 2025 on the 3000 block of Westfield Avenue.

Redfern was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon with intent to injure. She was not found guilty of attempted murder.

According to the prosecutor,  Redfern is more concerned about what she did and the consequences, rather than the life she took.

“The maximum sentence doesn’t seem to bother her,” said the prosecution. The state then played a recording of the defendant’s first phone call after the verdict was decided.

“I’m not a murderer!” said Redfern on the phone followed by significant laughter. The prosecution is s asking for the maximum sentence of 13 years.

The victim’s mother and three siblings spoke to Judge Handy before the sentence was given, expressing sorrow for the loss of their brother and son.

The victim’s mother told Judge Handy that she always taught Briscoe to use his fists as weapons if talking didn’t work.

But, defense attorney Martin Cohen argued that they shouldn’t have used any weapons at all and instead call 911.

Cohen said Redfern acted out of fear at the incident.

“I never set out to hurt anyone,” said Redfern before she tearfully apologized to the family.

Redfern was sentenced to 10 years and is eligible for parole after 5 years.
