A hostage situation in Northwest Baltimore has left a Baltimore Police officer and woman injured, according to a press conference held by the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) this afternoon.
The suspect, who has yet to be identified, was shot in the head by a sniper and pronounced dead on the scene.
According to BPD Commissioner Richard Worley, the suspect held the woman at a home on the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue. Tactical units responded to the scene, where a standoff ensued.
The woman, who is reportedly related to the suspect, was injured after jumping from the window of the home in an attempt to flee. The officer was shot in the leg after the suspect opened fire from inside the home around 11:50 a.m.
Investigators later recovered a firearm from inside the home.
The woman was transported to an area hospital for treatment, and the injured officer was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with a tourniquet on his leg. He is reported to be in stable condition.
“We’re just so thankful that the officer or any other folks in the neighborhood were not severely harmed. Our thoughts are with him and his family and even the family of the deceased,” said Mayor Brandon Scott. “We’re thankful to our BPD officers for bravely responding in the way that they did today.”
