Dog Euthanized After Biting Owner and ‘Charging’ Police in Southeast Baltimore

The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) announced an investigation into an officer-involved shooting in the Southeast District.

On March 5, at approximately 2:58 p.m., officers responded to the 6500 block of Hartwait Street for a reported dog bite incident.

Upon arrival, officers located the dog’s owner, who had been bitten. An officer then encountered the dog, which was not restrained and began charging at the officer.

Two officers discharged their firearms, striking the dog. One officer sustained a ricochet gunshot wound to his foot.

The officer and the dog’s owner were both transported to area hospitals for treatment. Both have since been released.

Animal Control was notified, responded to the scene, and removed the dog. The dog was later euthanized.

The BPD Special Investigations Response Team (SIRT) is investigating this incident, and BPD has activated its Public Release of Critical Incident Recordings Policy.
