Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Catherine Chen agreed to postpone the case of Monta York on March 3 after the prosecution requested time to evaluate the defendant’s mental competency to stand trial.
York, 36, is charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault and three gun violations in connection to a shooting incident that occurred the evening of July 22, 2025. Officers found the victim, who was 45 years old at the time and survived the shooting, on the 2100 block of Windsor Garden in Northeast Baltimore.
In filing the postponement request, defense attorney Andre M. Mahasa, cited concerns regarding York’s ability to understand his situation, criminal charges and the trial proceedings he faces. York’s family had informed Mahasa that the defendant often struggles to follow conversations, appearing confused or disoriented. Mahasa added he has noted similar observations while speaking with his client.
Meanwhile, York denied Mahasa’s claims and pushed for the case to be resolved without further delay, maintaining that he was mentally competent to participate in trial proceedings.
Ultimately, the state agreed with Mahasa’s concerns and backed his evaluation request, leading Judge Chen to grant the postponement.
York’s case is now set to return to reception court on March 13. Whether he receives a new date for trial will depend on the results of his competency evaluation. .
