Shooting

Man Shot Dead by Police in East Baltimore

The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General announced an investigation into a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred Feb. 24 in Baltimore.

The preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 6:15 p.m., officers with the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) were in a store on the 3600 block of Belair Road when they observed an adult man exit the store. Officers began following the man and gave multiple commands as he began to run.

As the man continued to run, he allegedly pulled out a handgun, coming in close proximity to one of the officers. Two officers fired their service weapons, striking the man.

Officers rendered emergency medical aid until emergency medical services arrived on scene. The man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No officers were injured during the incident. A handgun was recovered near the man.

The IID will generally release the name of the decedent and involved officers within two business days of the incident. Pursuant to IID protocol, that period may be extended, if necessary.

The officers on scene were equipped with body-worn cameras that recorded the incident. The video will be released in accordance with BPD and IID protocols.

Pursuant to Maryland law, the OAG is required to investigate all police-involved fatalities in the State of Maryland. The OAG and BPD have reached an agreement to allow for the Attorney General’s investigation while still allowing BPD to meet the investigatory obligations of its federal consent decree.
