Opening Statements Debate ‘Love Triangle’ Shooting Case

Opposing attorneys offered divergent views about physical and testimonial evidence in what has been characterized as a “love triangle” shooting in opening arguments on Jan. 29. The case is being heard before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Althea M. Handy

Anthony Marion II, 34, is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and five gun offenses in connection to the incident, which occurred Jan 28, 2025 on the 2700 block of Brendan Avenue. The prosecution alleges Marion shot his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, who had been sitting in his car outside of her house.

In their opening statement, the prosecution told the jury that the victim had been waiting for Marion’s girlfriend, when the defendant allegedly pulled a 9mm handgun from his waistband and repeatedly fired into the vehicle.

The victim reportedly called Marion’s girlfriend’s cellphone 58 times that evening, and had been acting “extreme and bizarre,” said defense attorney Robert Cole. Several shell casings were recovered from the scene following the shooting.

In the aftermath, the car was left “riddled with bullets,” and the victim sustained numerous gunshot wounds to his torso. Jurors can expect to view body-worn camera footage and hear testimony from the victim and investigators.

The trial is expected to continue through the week with additional witness testimonies.
