The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General announced it is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Jan. 20, in Southeast Baltimore.
The preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 9:14 p.m., officers with the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) responded to a 911 call regarding a person being threatened with a gun in the 6800 block of Bank Street. The caller provided a detailed description of the man, who reportedly fled the area on a white bicycle. Officers later observed a man in the 6500 block of Eastern Avenue riding a white bicycle and wearing clothing matching the description.
Early review of body-worn camera footage shows the man discharged a handgun while officers attempted to detain him. Multiple officers fired their service weapons, striking the man. Officers rendered emergency medical aid until emergency medical services (EMS) arrived, but the man was pronounced dead on the scene.
A handgun was recovered near the man. No officers were injured during the incident.
The IID will generally release the name of the decedent and involved officers within two business days of the incident, although this period may be extended if necessary, pursuant to IID protocol. The officers on scene were equipped with body-worn cameras, which recorded the incident, and the video will be released in accordance with BPD and IID policies.
Pursuant to Maryland law, the OAG is required to investigate all police-involved fatalities in the State of Maryland. The OAG and BPD have reached an agreement to allow for the Attorney General’s investigation while still allowing BPD to meet the investigatory obligations of its federal consent decree.
