Baltimore City Circuit Court proceedings continued on Nov. 4 in the case of Bryan Cherry, 37, as attorneys began jury selection following a one-day delay caused by a shortage of jurors.
Cherry, who is represented by defense attorney Gregory Fischer, is charged with first-degree murder and using a dangerous weapon with intent to injure in connection with the death of 27-year-old Sierra Johnson last July.
Charging documents note that on July 14, 2024, at approximately 9:29 a.m., Baltimore Police officers responded to a residence located on the 800 block of Abbot Court following a report of an assault. An anonymous 911 caller reported hearing a woman scream and seeing a man leave the home with blood on his clothing.
When officers arrived, they allegedly found Johnson half-dressed and unresponsive on a couch inside the residence with severe blunt force trauma to her face and head. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. A witness reported seeing a man jump out of the rear window and flee on foot, wearing a multi-colored jacket and black pants.
During Monday’s court session, the trial resumed after being postponed on Nov. 3 for lack of available jurors. The court proceeded with jury selection, with the goal of seating a full panel for opening statements and testimony later this week.
The day prior, the prosecution had brought new video evidence before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry G. Williams, hoping to admit the footage for trial. The defense continued to object to portions of the footage, claiming the contents could prejudice jurors against Cherry. Judge Williams agreed to several redactions and admitted the remaining footage for trial.
Proceedings are expected to continue once a full jury is seated.
