Co-Defendants’ Cases Stay Joined in 2024 Federal Hill Murder Case

Co-defendants Daeshaun Tyreke Clark, 29 and Devontaye Richardson, 30, appeared before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Lynn Stewart Mays on Oct. 31 as the court addressed motions related to a fatal October 27, 2024 shooting in Federal Hill that left 19-year-old Cameran Holt dead.

Clark is charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, firearm use in a felony or violent crime, reckless endangerment, and several gun violations. Richardson faces similar charges, including first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and multiple firearm offenses. The shooting also left a 28-year-old man injured.

During the hearing, the court considered a motion to reconsider joinder and a motion to depose a crime-lab technician due to scheduling conflicts. Judge Mays granted the motion for a deposition to take place later today, but ruled that the co-defendants will remain joined for trial.

The prosecution told the courts they had provided redacted versions of key statements for the jury as requested by both defense attorneys, and stated they were prepared to move forward with proceedings.

Richardson’s attorney, Daniel P. Mooney, argued that his client’s statement did not mention co-defendant Clark, suggesting that a joint trial could unfairly prejudice his defense. Clark’s attorney, Jerry Rodriguez, raised similar concerns, adding that some portions were redacted despite defense counsel not requesting so, and might be taken out of context in regards to Clark’s alleged involvement.

Judge Mays said she would consider reviewing the motion further if substantial changes arose but found no basis to remove the joinder, ruling that the defendants will remain joined for trial.

Their co-defendant, 21-year-old Alexis Cancel-Soto, was tried separately and found guilty in September for Holt’s murder. Cancel-Soto is currently scheduled for sentencing on Dec. 3.

The deposition is set to occur later this afternoon, and jury selection in Clark and Richardson’s joint trial was postponed to Nov 3.
