Three co-defendants charged in a suspected January murder attempt faced an impasse in trial proceedings on Oct. 21 due to unresolved juvenile matters involving one of the co- defendants, who was a minor at the time of the incident .
Keon Brooks, 19, is reportedly charged in two pending juvenile cases. Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn ordered a postponement after she found that the premature finalization of Brooks’ two cases in adult criminal court could potentially violate his legal rights under Maryland’s juvenile law protections.
He is charged alongside Justin Griggs, 18, and Donte Mack, 23, for allegedly injuring a 20-year-old man during a shooting that occurred Nov. 25, 2024 on the 2300 block of W. North Avenue. Griggs and Mack appeared before Judge Jeannie J. Hong, who was unable to proceed with their case due to Brooks’ jurisdictional issues.
Judge Phinn ruled for the case to be postponed until Oct. 24. Pending the outcome of Friday’s proceedings, the defendants may be offered a reset.
Further updates on the case are expected following the juvenile court’s ruling.
