Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Cynthia H. Jones heard opening statements in the trial of Dominic Felder, 34, on July 7.
Felder is charged with first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony crime of violence, firearm possession with a disqualifying felony conviction and having a handgun on his person in connection to the shooting of Tavin Cooper, 20, that occurred last October on the 2500 block of McHenry street.
According to charging documents, on Oct. 2, 2024, at approximately 9:49 p.m., Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers responded to the 2500 block of McHenry Street following multiple ShotSpotter alerts. Upon arrival, they observed Cooper with two gunshot wounds to his head. Cooper was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and pronounced deceased the following morning, at 3:01 a.m.
Defense attorney John E. Cox’s emotional opening statement claimed that the prosecution was jumping to conclusions in accusing his client. He noted the prosecution’s main witness frequently changes his recollection of events and seemed unable to provide a description of the supposed shooter.
The prosecution gave a brief statement, urging jurors to pay close attention to witness testimonies, especially those identifying Felder as the shooter.
The trial is slated to continue.
