A Baltimore City prosecutor alleges 36-year-old homicide defendant Bryan Cherry was identified by the mother of his unborn child as the suspect in a stabbing at the East Baltimore Medical Center last year.
Cherry pleaded not guilty to attempted first- and second-degree murder and assault as well as use of a deadly weapon with intent to injure on June 23 as he moves forward with a jury trial before Circuit Court Judge Gregory Sampson.
During opening statements, the prosecution alleged that surveillance footage showed Cherry and his child’s mother entering the clinic together and then leaving together after the stabbing on the 1000 block of E. Eager Street on June 26, 2024. Cherry and his child’s mother, who positively identified Cherry as the suspect, reportedly live together.
The prosecution said there was no provocation and Cherry intended to kill.
Cherry’s counsel, Gregory Fisher, expressed sympathy for the victim but maintained Cherry’s innocence. Fisher pointed to the lack of physical evidence or motive and suggested the prosecution used coercion to obtain witness testimony.
The trial is set to continue on June 24.
According to charging documents, Baltimore Police Department (BPD) detectives were able to identify Cherry as the perpetrator through surveillance footage capturing the incident. The victim gave detectives a description that matched Cherry: a Black male in his late 20s with a beard and wearing a black cap.
Additionally, officers tracked Cherry’s movement from the clinic to Latrobe Homes, where he resides. Cherry allegedly knew where the victim worked and resided very close to his workplace.
