In Baltimore, a fatal officer-involved shooting occurred on May 12. The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is investigating this case.
A preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 1:25 p.m., officers with the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) encountered 26-year-old Jai Marc Howell on the 4600 block of York Road.
As officers approached, Howell began running away, according to a news release from the OAG. During the ensuing chase, Howell displayed a gun and did not comply with the officers’ commands. Following an exchange of gunfire between the two parties, the man was wounded in multiple areas.
Officers rendered emergency medical aid on the scene and requested additional emergency medical services. They recovered a semiautomatic gun with an extended magazine near the man.
The man was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. No officers were injured.
The incident was recorded through officers’ body cameras. The video footage release will be managed according to BPD and IID guidelines.
The OAG has identified the officers involved as Detective Enger Jimenez, a 4-year veteran of the department; Detective Steven Foster, an 11-year veteran of the department; and Detective Tony Tiburzi, a 5-year veteran of the department. According to the release, the officers are assigned to the Northern District Action Team.
Pursuant to Maryland law, the OAG is required to investigate all police-involved fatalities in the State of Maryland. The OAG and BPD have permitted the Attorney General’s investigation, allowing BPD to maintain the investigatory obligations of its agreement with both parties within the federal government.
