A jury has convicted defendant Antonio Bardney of a fatal robbery in Canton that killed 60-year-old Victorino Malabayabas in 2022.
Following a three-day trial, the 24-year-old defendant was found guilty of first-degree murder and robbery on Dec. 17 for Malabayabas’ murder on the 600 block of South Kenwood Avenue on Aug. 23, 2022. Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Lawrence R. Daniels presided over the trial, with defense attorney Christopher O’Meara representing Bardney.
The defendant’s sentencing is currently scheduled for April 14, 2025.
According to the prosecutor, Bardney deceived Malabayabas by asking for help before robbing him of his wallet and throwing the victim to the ground. Malabayabas later died from his injuries.
Baltimore Police found the victim’s wallet, which showed traces of Bardney’s likely DNA, the prosecutor said at trial.
O’Meara argued DNA doesn’t always directly transfer, noting that Malabayabas’ pocket also had DNA from at least one unidentified contributor.
The jury reached its verdict following a day of deliberations.
