A jury has convicted 20-year-old Mekhi Green of attempted murder for a shooting outside a Popeyes restaurant earlier this year.
Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeannie J. Hong granted defense attorney Augustine Okeke’s motion for judgment of acquittal for Green’s two attempted first-degree murders charge on Nov. 20. The following day, the jury found the defendant guilty of two counts of firearm use in a felony or violent crime and use of an assault weapon as well as single counts of attempted second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, having a handgun on his person and discharging a handgun.
There was no verdict for two first-degree assault charges.
Green was first tried for the aforementioned charges during a two-day trial before Judge Lawrence R. Daniels, which began on Nov. 15. However, a mistrial was declared and a retrial occurred before Judge Hong days later.
The defendant’s charges stemmed from a shooting on Feb. 26 when Green was accused of shooting a 22-year-old man on the 4400 block of Edmondson Avenue. He was arrested three weeks later.
At trial, Okeke argued that Green and his girlfriend were at Popeyes and saw four individuals, one of whom had a gun. Green shot one of the victims while trying to protect himself, defense counsel told jurors.
