A Baltimore City Circuit Court judge has denied bail for a 38-year-old woman who is accused of a retaliatory drive-by shooting at a family shelter in September.

The prosecutor trying the case told Judge Jeffrey M. Geller on Nov. 19 that Marquita Eshana Echols, a mother of two, had lived at a former Sleep Inn and Suites, which had since been used as a shelter on the 300 block of Falls Way. Echols was evicted and had the “motive to retaliate,” shooting at two men on Sept. 7.

The defendant and the victims knew each other, the prosecutor noted. Five shell casings were also recovered from the street.

“Shooting a handgun at human beings is, obviously, a serious threat,” she said.

Echols criminal history includes charges of malicious destruction of property in 2022, theft less than $100 in 2014, second-degree assault in 2011 and first-degree assault in 2008.

Michael Clinkscale, who represents Echols, argued his client is being unconstitutionally detained as no firearm or weapon has been linked to her, despite the victims claim that she shot at them. The defense attorney said the defendant’s eight-year-old son is currently suffering from separation anxiety since his mother’s arrest.

Clinkscale asked for pre-trial release.

Given the circumstances and Echols’ history, Judge Geller denied bail. Echols is next scheduled in appear in reception court on Jan. 29, 2025.

Her charges include multiple counts of attempted first and second-degree murder and first-degree assault  as well as seven weapons charges.
