A motion hearing for the attempted murder case against teen-ager Ashad Bennett was scheduled , July 30 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland in reception court. Court. However, the proceeding was postponed for lack of defense counsel. No explanation was offered for his absence, although he has reportedly been discussing a possible resolution with the prosecution.
Currently, the name and age of the victim have not been released, nor the age of the defendant although he was under sixteen-years-old at the time of the crime. Due to the severity of the incident, the State’s Attorney wants Bennett tried as an adult.
This was the second time defense attorney Chelsey Seger failed to appear. The defendant’s initial hearing was set for June 5. Earlier, the prosecution proposed a plea offer for attempted first-degree murder of life suspending all but 30 years, and five years of supervised probation. The plea was rejected.
The prosecutor told the court that the state previously proposed trial dates to the defense but had not received a response.
Judge Copeland rescheduled the hearing for Aug. 7, 2026. The case remains pending while the court awaits the outcome of juvenile transfer proceedings.
The victim’s family has expressed a desire for Bennett to be tried in adult court.
