A man pleaded guilty before Judge Lawrence R. Daniels of the Baltimore City Circuit Court on Nov. 13 to shooting his girlfriend. She was wounded in the leg after an argument over posts on social media.
Isiah A.J. Hunt, 23, was convicted of first degree assault and firearm use in a prohibited status. He entered a guilty binding plea to charges, receiving a cumulative sentence of 40 years, suspending all but 12 with five years supervised probation. He had been previously convicted in California of a misdemeanor gun charge which increased his sentence since he was not legally allowed to have a gun in any capacity at the time of the shooting.
The confrontation took place on Nov 23, 2023 during which Hunt and his then girlfriend were having a heated argument over posts on social media at a residence on the 500 block of East 35th Street.
His victim said that he pointed the gun at her and threatened to kill her. Witnesses attested that Hunt got out of a vehicle shooting and hit the victim in the leg before driving off in another vehicle.
In her impact statement, the victim says the shooting has traumatized her and her sister who was witness to the crime. Due to nerve damage, she cannot go back to work, is unable to collect unemployment and struggles to make ends meet. She fears that someone else connected to Hunt will also come and shoot her.
Hunt’s attorney, John Hassett, told Judge Daniels that despite the binding plea, that he and the prosecution have agreed to allow Hunt to file a motion to change his sentencing if he sees fit.
Judge Daniels warned Hunt that if he doesn’t abide by the rules, his sentence could increase.. Hunt is required to complete an abuser intervention program as well as register as a gun offender.
