An 18-year-old Baltimore man will serve 65 years in prison following his conviction for the murder of 17-year-old Jeremiah Brogden at Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School in 2022.
On May 10, family and friends of Brogden filled the gallery in Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Dana M. Middleton’s courtroom for the sentencing of Nizah Daniels, who was convicted of first-degree murder and three weapons charges in September 2023. The prosecution recommended a sentence of life plus 15 years for the charges.
The shooting occurred at the high school on the 3500 block of Hillen Road on Sept. 2, 2022.
During Friday’s proceedings, a faculty member of Mergenthaler told Judge Middleton that Brogden’s murder left lasting impacts on both faculty and students given the shooting occurred in front of many students at the end of the school day on school grounds.
Defense attorney Roland Harris said Daniels had no intention of killing Brogden, but went to the school to meet girls and attend the school’s football game that evening. Harris recommended a sentence of life, suspending all but 40 years—the same offer the prosecution conveyed before trial.
Judge Middleton acknowledged this was a case she will never forget due to its horrific nature. She then imposed a sentence of life, suspending all but 50 years, for first-degree murder, a consecutive 10 years, the first five years without parole, for firearm use in a crime of violence, a consecutive five years for possessing a firearm as a minor and a concurrent three years for having a handgun on his person.
