Officer Shot Man on Accident While Responding to Dog Attack at Mount Vernon Home, Police Say

The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) has ruled an Oct. 26 non-fatal shooting incident accidental.

On Oct. 26, at approximately 4:44 p.m., Central District officers were dispatched to a residence on the 900 block of St. Paul Street for a report of an animal bite.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with the dog’s owner through the door, who informed officers that the dog was being aggressive and had bitten him. Officers attempted to have the owner, a 33-year-old male, secure the dog in another room, but that was unsuccessful. A short time later, the dog began attacking the owner inside the residence.

The owner exited the residence while the dog continued to attack him. Two officers discharged their service weapons, fatally wounding the dog and striking the owner. The male sustained an accidental gunshot wound to the leg and several bite wounds. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

BPD’s Special Investigations Response Team (SIRT) is investigating this incident, and BPD has activated its Public Release of Critical Incident Recordings Policy.
