The sentencing of attempted murder convict Draquan Smith was postponed on Nov. 2 when defense counsel requested to reschedule the proceedings pending the outcome of a separate homicide case against the defendant.

Smith was charged in two different incidents that occurred exactly three months apart in 2022. In May, the 22-year-old defendant was convicted of attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment and weapons charges in connection to a shooting outside the Charles Center Metro Station on June 27, 2022.

The defendant is currently facing two counts of first-degree murder and firearm use in a felony or violent crime for the murder of 20-year-old Joshua Camara three months earlier on the 2600 block of Northshire Drive on March 27, 2022.

On Thursday, defense attorney Latoya Francis-Williams asked Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeannie J. Hong to push Smith’s sentencing for the attempted murder beyond Dec. 13 when he is scheduled to appear in reception court for his homicide case. Francis-Williams, alongside her co-counsel, Sheridan Yeary, told the judge the homicide case was previously dismissed in August; however, the prosecution has since decided to refile the murder and weapons charges against defendant.

The outcome of the Dec. 13 proceeding will determine how defense counsel proceeds with Smith’s sentencing in the attempted murder case, she said.

The prosecution was not opposed to the defense’s request.

Judge Hong granted counsel’s request, but informed them the sentencing would need to be rescheduled on her collateral docket, which occurs once a month. Counsel agreed to return before Judge Hong at 1:00 p.m. on Jan. 8, 2024.
