Attempted murder charges were dismissed on Dec. 19 against a 29-year-old man accused of shooting a woman on South Poppleton Street in February.

On Tuesday morning, Dontay Washington appeared for a scheduled jury selection before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Yolanda A. Tanner. However, the defendant chose to accept the prosecution’s plea offer of 15 years, suspending all but five years without parole, and three years of supervised probation for firearm possession with a felony conviction and a concurrent one year for having a loaded handgun in a vehicle.

According to Washington’s defense attorney, James Sweeting III, the defendant’s attempted first and second-degree murder charges were dismissed. The remainder of Washington’s 18 initial charges included conspiracy to first-degree murder, assault, conspiracy to commit assault, reckless endangerment and 12 weapons charges.

Charging documents state that Washington shot a woman on Feb. 8 on the unit block of South Poppleton Street where Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers found the victim inside a gray 2018 Ford Escape. The victim told police she did not know who shot her, but a witness was able to identify the defendant as the shooter.

Breonna Wilson, Washington’s 26-year-old co-defendant, is believed to be the orchestrator of the incident, the witness reported. Wilson is currently facing similar charges and is scheduled for trial on Feb. 21, 2024.
