Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Mellisa K.Copeland postponed homicide defendant Uriah Cunningham’s four-day jury trial on April 7.
Cunningham, 32, is charged with first-degree murder, firearm use in a violent crime, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, and having a loaded handgun in his vehicle and on his person in connection to a Sept. 29, 2024 shooting. According to charging documents, police responded to the 1800 block of Wilhelm Street following nine ShotSpotter alerts and located Melvin Rogers, 43, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Officers attempted life-saving measures at the scene before Rogers was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He was pronounced deceased shortly after.
Baltimore Witness previously reported on Feb. 7 that Cunningham rejected a plea offer of life, suspending all but 55 years, for the charge of first-degree murder, as well as five years of supervised probation and gun offender registry. For firearm-related charges, Cunningham was offered a concurrent 20 years, the first five without possibility of parole.
Charging documents indicate that the prosecution plans to summon a witness and present CCTV footage evidence when the case reaches trial.
Cunningham’s trial is now set for Aug. 25 before Judge Copeland.
