Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gale E. Rasin ordered a May 7 mental observation hearing for double-homicide defendant Gold Leroy Bass Jr., 74, on April 2.

Bass is charged with first-degree murder and use of a handgun while committing a violent crime in connection to a 1973 fatal shooting that killed 31-year-old Harry McGee and 27-year-old Nathaniel Sheppared.

Baltimore Witness previously reported that Bass’s case was reopened due to doubts about his ability to understand a trial. Bass reportedly suffers from heart disease and stroke that interferes with his ability to understand and communicate with his defense attorney.

Bass was released on his own recognizance in 2021.
