Jury Selection Underway For April’s N. Ellwood Avenue Shooting

Counsel in the case against attempted homicide defendant Demetrick Lewis started selecting a jury on Oct. 8 for his involvement in a shooting last April.

Prior to calling for a 90-person jury panel, the prosecutor informed Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge LaZette C. Ringgold-Kirksey that his three witnesses were unavailable on Thursday, so the judge and counsel agreed to begin testimony on Oct. 9.

Defense attorney Maureen O’Leary will represent Lewis at trial.

Lewis is accused of shooting at two men on the evening of April 23 along the 600 block of N. Ellwood Avenue. The prosecution has charged the 35-year-old defendant with three counts each of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and using a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence as well as four additional weapons violations and reckless endangerment.

The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) was alerted to the shooting around 8 p.m. on the night of the incident and found spent shell casings, blood and a vehicle struck by gunfire at the scene. About an hour later, court documents state, Lewis was found suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso. He reportedly told police he was shot on the 3300 block of Dulany Street.

During their investigation, police found video surveillance from the 600 block of N. Ellwood Avenue that showed a man in a green jacket, white shirt and pants, and hat — later identified as the person said to be the defendant — riding a Lime scooter. After falling over, Lewis began shooting at and chasing a man wearing all black, who ran down the block and into an alley. Another man in a black shirt and jean shorts then approached Lewis from behind and began shooting at the defendant as he ran back to his scooter and drove away.

Court documents state that police confirmed that the victim who shot Lewis was uninjured; however, it is unknown if the victim who was shot at by the defendant was injured in the shooting.
